Kevin Wachira is a peer counselor at Mukuru slums. He says , “ I came into contact with Youth Ventures Initiatives in early 2018 when I was identified and selected to be trained as a peer counselor. The training changed me for good. Now I understand the whole spectrum of health issues and drugs including HIV/AIDS. I have helped many of my relatives, friends and neighbors to be cautious in their behavior.” Remarks Kevin recently. Kevin goes on to say, “ I am observing a lot of change in some of the youth who were getting into drug abuse and who have stopped taking drugs.” He goes on to say, “Parents have found me useful and call me to counsel their youth. I am even living with a 16 year old youth brought to me by an old grandmother who can no longer manage to bring him up due to his difficult behavior. With my help this youth has changed”.
YOVI also provides condoms to peer counselors so that they are able to make them accessible to those who need them in the slum. Kevin has been involved in this and says, “I find time to walk around the slum and distribute condoms at social places. I also keep some at my video and football shows enterprise whereby men who come for these shows are able to get condoms from me. The only problem is that I do not have a condoms dispenser which I can strategically position at my business so those who need them are able to access them easily”. Adds Kevin.
