JOHN CHAKA: PEER COUNSELOR

John reaches out to adolescent girls in schools at Mukuru slums. He has come across girls who could not concentrate at  school due to keeping bad company. He counsels such girls to avoid such company and many have turned around and are now focused at school and their school performance has improved a great deal. He observed that keeping bad company was pushing the girls to such vices as prostitution exposing them to dangers of contracting HIV. Since training as a peer counselor, John has also been recruited to work as a Community Health Volunteer and has become well known in the community. Parents have confidence in him and refer their children to him.
